A round-tailed ground squirrel, that is.
I was utterly surprised and delighted the other day to see this cute little guy (gal? I'm no squirrel expert) hanging out under my neighbor's car in front of my window. I've seen these squirrels in other parts of the valley, but never in this part of town. Also, these critters are really shy and I usually just catch a glimpse of one out of the corner of my eye or see the tail-end disappearing down a hole, so getting to watch one for a while was a real treat.
He was one of the most nervous critters I've ever seen. He was constantly checking for danger, occasionally doing a prairie dog impression so he could see better. Whenever he perceived a threat, he would absolutely flatten himself to the ground and stay completely still until the threat had passed. He also kept trying to climb the car for some reason. Somehow, in the midst of all this activity he actually managed to take a few bites out of the food that had attracted him.
